See how to make special effects masks

Karl Zundel is a professional special effects artist who has made masks for movies, videos, and theatrical productions.

The video demonstrates making an actual "alien" type mask all the way from the concept, to the sculpture, to making the molds, to casting, and final painting.

Techniques demonstrated include how to make a clay model, how to make decorative stamps to put repeating designs in a clay model, how to smooth out the designs and make them more realistic, how to make a two part plaster mold, how to use latex rubber for casting a thin, hollow product such as a mask, how to dry the latex rubber, and how to decorate the finished mask.

Learn techniques useful for doll making, puppet making, or Halloween mask making

Even though the demonstration subject is a full head "Hollywood" type special effects mask, many of the same techniques can be applied to smaller items such as doll parts, puppets, and one sided "Halloween" type masks.
